How do I properly thaw a frozen turkey?
There are three safe ways to thaw a turkey: in the refrigerator, in cold water and in the microwave. Never thaw a turkey on the counter or in other locations. It’s best to plan ahead for slow, safe thawing in the refrigerator. Allow about 24 hours for every 5 pounds of turkey to thaw in the refrigerator. A thawed turkey can remain in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days.
Allow one pound of turkey per person. Cooking time is approximately 12-15 minutes per pound. A whole turkey is safe cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 165 °F (73.9 °C) throughout the bird as measured with a food thermometer. Check the internal temperature in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast.
